Some of the most notable take aways include the new block page layout and UI for updating, adding, and editing&nbsp;blocks, the addition of custom blocks and fieldable types (similar to <span id=\"urn:enhancement-4bdd6454-831a-634e-0c69-ff2f03886620\" class=\"textannotation wl-thing disambiguated\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01166\/entity\/content_media\">content<\/span> types), and integration with display <span id=\"urn:enhancement-ec853420-2154-f861-efa0-34daad705c56\" class=\"textannotation wl-thing disambiguated\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01166\/entity\/view_sql\">view<\/span> modes to allow for rendering changes based on block placement. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.d8cards.com\/activity-cards\/day-05-drupal-8-block-system.html\">Day 5<\/a>&nbsp;directs you to a good introductory video of the new blocks system by the Drupalize.me team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"A Preview of Blocks in Drupal 8\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3Yc8WlibNEw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Using the New Block System<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Several exercises have been provided to help gain familiarity with the new block system. The first of which involves the creation of a new block type with various fields and then the creation of several blocks based on this type. I found the new block system relatively intuitive and easy to understand. While there are differences from the previous <span id=\"urn:enhancement-5d61c7c5-4390-fc18-1740-cb9007aa9e94\" class=\"textannotation wl-creative-work disambiguated\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01166\/entity\/drupal\">Drupal<\/span> 7 block system, overall I found it pleasant to use and with the addition with block types that are fieldable, I can imagine several <span id=\"urn:enhancement-6928ccd6-f46f-5cd1-c854-997c65f46b67\" class=\"textannotation wl-thing disambiguated\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01166\/entity\/use_case\">use cases<\/span> I will have for this in the near future. One of the take aways I found in this exercise was the ability to now place different &#8216;instances&#8217; of a block within different regions. In <span id=\"urn:enhancement-1fcc3015-b682-b1f8-9a28-9f7498181e47\" class=\"textannotation wl-creative-work disambiguated\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01166\/entity\/drupal\">Drupal<\/span> 7 you could only place a block in one place, however now a block is treated as an instance and can therefore be duplicated across different parts of your layout. I&#8217;m yet to find a valid <span id=\"urn:enhancement-c0d92a55-1ee9-460e-c8a5-32930050fc5a\" class=\"textannotation wl-thing disambiguated\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01166\/entity\/use_case\">use case<\/span> for this, however it was an interesting change. With the integration of display <span id=\"urn:enhancement-8aeb34d8-30ba-dbed-e646-04610a55247b\" class=\"textannotation wl-thing disambiguated\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01166\/entity\/view_sql\">view<\/span> modes, each new block type created can be setup to have its own set of display modes. Once you create a block of that type, the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-1bca7054-d360-02ad-7bed-5530a65050ce\" class=\"textannotation wl-thing disambiguated\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01166\/entity\/user_computing\">user<\/span> will have the ability to choose which display <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e10b0649-d111-79b1-70cb-df7d66176539\" class=\"textannotation wl-thing disambiguated\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01166\/entity\/view_sql\">view<\/span> mode to use for that block. The Drupalize.me video above demonstrates this well using a thumbnail image in one <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e4b70000-7a69-ef4c-e460-cec2cbd6295f\" class=\"textannotation wl-thing disambiguated\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01166\/entity\/view_sql\">view<\/span> mode and full image in the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Blocks in Code<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As with many other parts of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-9e9f30b2-ec94-23f5-d789-d5fe034f5fe3\" class=\"textannotation wl-creative-work disambiguated\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01166\/entity\/drupal\">Drupal<\/span> 8, the block system is now part of the configuration management system. What this means is that whenever a block is created, corresponding configuration code will&nbsp;represent it in configuration management. If you export all of you&nbsp;configuration via the drupal console by issuing the command <strong>drupal ce<\/strong> (Content Export), all config files including individual yml files for your blocks will be exported. This gives you greater control in editing and crafting new blocks within custom <span id=\"urn:enhancement-6a7f4d03-ec70-99a8-f2d3-2080d6323074\" class=\"textannotation wl-thing disambiguated\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01166\/entity\/modular_programming\">modules<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the exercise, part 2 requires the use of an external <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e89b8e4d-a151-0195-0dc4-936aca66d4b2\" class=\"textannotation wl-thing disambiguated\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01166\/entity\/application_programming_interface\">API<\/span> to populate fields within the blocks created in part 1. The process involves writing&nbsp;a custom <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e74f04d2-5e72-f190-126d-d2dedebe118d\" class=\"textannotation wl-thing disambiguated\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01166\/entity\/modular_programming\">module<\/span> that will run on <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b8320516-c396-be19-7249-3e9b0cb44cea\" class=\"textannotation wl-thing disambiguated\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01166\/entity\/cron\">cron<\/span> and will&nbsp;retrieve the blocks, iterate through each instance, call the external <span id=\"urn:enhancement-8208e42b-6cac-e460-277b-8003474dccbb\" class=\"textannotation wl-thing disambiguated\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01166\/entity\/application_programming_interface\">API<\/span>, and populate fields with information returned from the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b86680b8-357b-9971-f97c-473c91c257a7\" class=\"textannotation wl-thing disambiguated\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01166\/entity\/application_programming_interface\">API<\/span> call. After doing a little research, it appears there are two main ways you can use <span id=\"urn:enhancement-089a7b46-de46-f29c-ba37-1505d27542c0\" class=\"textannotation wl-thing disambiguated\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01166\/entity\/cron\">cron<\/span> in <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b482bf7c-5447-640c-76bb-48e8dc176506\" class=\"textannotation wl-creative-work disambiguated\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01166\/entity\/drupal\">Drupal<\/span> 8. The first is by using the familiar <a href=\"https:\/\/api.drupal.org\/api\/drupal\/core!core.api.php\/function\/hook_cron\/8.2.x\">hook_cron<\/a> function, and the other uses the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sitepoint.com\/drupal-8-queue-api-powerful-manual-and-cron-queueing\/\">Drupal 8 Queue API<\/a>. &nbsp;Using the hook system would involve writing <span id=\"urn:enhancement-bb4a8327-77db-7452-8d03-4f6a20bff5ec\" class=\"textannotation wl-thing disambiguated\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01166\/entity\/modular_programming\">module<\/span> code directly in the .<span id=\"urn:enhancement-14712d10-b0ba-5144-dc67-fd99d343c97b\" class=\"textannotation wl-thing disambiguated\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01166\/entity\/modular_programming\">module<\/span> file similar to the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-11514c96-b36d-4651-1160-c8489a843887\" class=\"textannotation wl-creative-work disambiguated\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01166\/entity\/drupal\">Drupal<\/span> 7 way of writing <span id=\"urn:enhancement-53fa28bb-0730-e42b-3001-102f7d7be8a4\" class=\"textannotation wl-thing disambiguated\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01166\/entity\/modular_programming\">modules<\/span>. <span id=\"urn:enhancement-aad6f0ce-81ff-e4f4-29e7-d197e7df1b8f\" class=\"textannotation wl-thing disambiguated\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01166\/entity\/queue_abstract_data_type\">Queue<\/span> <span id=\"urn:enhancement-7374572f-2516-d2f2-7a09-e9309278f2d1\" class=\"textannotation wl-thing disambiguated\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01166\/entity\/application_programming_interface\">API<\/span> on the other hand uses the newer services oriented approach. I am not sure if the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b9df34c2-a091-8cb1-6677-1af29950d42e\" class=\"textannotation wl-thing disambiguated\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01166\/entity\/queue_abstract_data_type\">Queue<\/span> <span id=\"urn:enhancement-9403a65e-b98a-fb03-a3a2-431137cc67d2\" class=\"textannotation wl-thing disambiguated\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01166\/entity\/application_programming_interface\">API<\/span> will eventually replace hook_<span id=\"urn:enhancement-2893930a-73ee-4d2e-81a7-594d939a7360\" class=\"textannotation wl-thing disambiguated\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01166\/entity\/cron\">cron<\/span>, however it seems to encapsulate all of its functionality and provides greater extensibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was a little bit lost in trying to complete part two but I reviewed&nbsp;two good examples linked from d8cards.com, the first by <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/neetumorwani\/D8-study-group\/tree\/master\/stock_exchange\">neetuymorwani<\/a>, who uses hook_<span id=\"urn:enhancement-0a1056c6-1b08-ebc4-0259-bd8d7b82cba4\" class=\"textannotation wl-thing disambiguated\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01166\/entity\/cron\">cron<\/span>, &nbsp;and the second by <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/mirsoftacquia\/d8sandbox\/tree\/master\/modules\/custom\/stocks_update\">mirsoftacquia<\/a> who uses the Queue <span id=\"urn:enhancement-05f18119-83f7-95df-a460-638df95fc53f\" class=\"textannotation wl-thing disambiguated\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01166\/entity\/application_programming_interface\">API<\/span>. The hook_<span id=\"urn:enhancement-0a3e6a65-a404-3bf3-1343-b2110e4fd6e8\" class=\"textannotation wl-thing disambiguated\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01166\/entity\/cron\">cron<\/span> example used entityTypeManager to grab all of the blocks that needed populating by the service. Then&nbsp;<span id=\"urn:enhancement-d1ca7997-ee50-d8f1-ed48-0b63615dda0d\" class=\"textannotation wl-creative-work disambiguated\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01166\/entity\/drupal\">Drupal<\/span>::httpClient() was used to access the service along with&nbsp;<span id=\"urn:enhancement-02487a2e-cebe-ad5f-650e-d145714ad430\" class=\"textannotation wl-thing disambiguated\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01166\/entity\/json\">Json<\/span>::decode to parse the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-48379bb3-39c3-0d20-17bf-eea0cbeaede4\" class=\"textannotation wl-thing disambiguated\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01166\/entity\/data\">data<\/span> correctly into the block fields. When I was reviewing this code I also came across a handy <a href=\"http:\/\/wizzlern.nl\/sites\/wizzlern.nl\/files\/artikel\/drupal-content-entity-8.0.pdf\">Content Entity \/ Entity Query cheatsheet<\/a>. I found myself a little bit confused with the Queue <span id=\"urn:enhancement-946cb826-1a66-4058-08e1-f8df69601a4d\" class=\"textannotation wl-thing disambiguated\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01166\/entity\/application_programming_interface\">API<\/span> example, howewver I found a good tutorial at SitePoint which helped clarify some of this,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sitepoint.com\/drupal-8-queue-api-powerful-manual-and-cron-queueing\/\">Drupal 8 Queue API \u2013 Powerful Manual and Cron Queueing<\/a>. The Queue <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b6070391-dfce-9d9e-9afa-968e1a08c320\" class=\"textannotation wl-thing disambiguated\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01166\/entity\/application_programming_interface\">API<\/span> will also be covered in Day 7 of this series, so there will be more to come on that subject.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Among the many changes in Drupal 8, the blocks system received an overhaul, which has improved much of its functionality significantly.
